'Weeds' Actors Get High on Dramatic Twists
In its six seasons, Showtime’s hit series “Weeds” has moved to some pretty dark places. The black comedy that follows suburban soccer mom and pot dealer Nancy Botwin from the golden hills of California to federal prison has gradually shed some of its sunny, irreverent charm as it enters its seventh season tonight.
That doesn’t faze series regulars Justin Kirk and Hunter Parrish, who respectively play Nancy’s brother-in-law and eldest son. The way they see it, the show’s descent into darkness is just a natural part of telling the Botwin story.
“The only way to keep telling this story is to keep raising the stakes,” Kirk said in a recent phone interview with Speakeasy. “I think the story of ‘Weeds’ is the story of the rise of Nancy Botwin through criminality. The real story is that this is who Nancy Botwin was always supposed to be.”
Plus, the comedic element is still a big part of the series, Kirk said.
“Tonally, we still do straight, flat-out comedy,” he said. “Maybe I’m too close to it, but look — Hunter and I were eating heads of butter last season.”
That mix of sitcom humor and drug crime drama has made “Weeds” one of premium cable’s most potent hits. As Nancy Botwin, actress Mary Louise Parker has won an Emmy and a Golden Globe, and the show regularly averages more than 1 million viewers per episode, a real mark of success in the crowded and high-profile cable lineup
It’s a success that the cast is still surprised by.
“We get renewed each year, and every year feels like the last season,” Parrish said in a recent phone interview. Series creator Jenji Kohan has said in interviews that the seventh season could be the last, although Showtime has since indicated that the series could still be renewed for an eighth season.
“If we ended this year, that’d be a great run,” Parrish said. “My biggest hope and also my biggest fear is that we’ll end the show without having ended the show. That’d be a real disservice to the fans.”
As the seventh season begins, Nancy Botwin finishes three years of jail time for a murder she didn’t commit and heads to New York City to meet up with her brother-in-law and children. Andy and the boys fled to Copenhagen, Denmark while Nancy served time.
Although ads for the new season have pushed the New York storyline, Parrish, Kirk and the rest of the cast stayed in Los Angeles to film the new episodes.
