State of Ohio investigating outbreak of infections caused by Salmonella
Nationwide, a majority of individuals with available information reported exposure to chicks and/or ducklings purchased at different locations of a national agricultural feed store that reported obtaining their chicks and ducklings from an Ohio based company, Mt. Healthy Hatchery . Both businesses have been working with state and federal officials to investigate the outbreak and to stop additional individuals from becoming ill. Other companies may have also received and distributed infected chicks and ducklings. Do not let children younger than 5 years of age, elderly persons or people with weak immune systems handle or touch chicks, ducklings or other live poultry. These individuals should also avoid entering the area where the poultry live. Do not let live poultry inside the house, in bathrooms or especially in areas where food or drink is prepared, served or stored, such as kitchens or outdoor patios.Mt Healthy Hatchery - News

Ohio Hatchery Responds to Salmonella Outbreak - WJW
State health officials say the outbreak has spread to 8 counties in Ohio: Ashtabula, Columbiana, Medina, Franklin, Wood, Hamilton, Jefferson and Licking.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the same strain of Salmonella has spread to 15 states and infected 39 people.
No deaths have been reported but at least nine have been hospitalized. Infected individuals have ranged in age from 3-months-old to elderly adults.
Jen House, spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Health, said all of the contaminations have been traced back to chicks and ducklings from Mt. Healthy Hatcheries, Inc. located in southern Ohio, near Cincinnati .
"When people carry [chicks or ducklings], or play with them in their homes, or on their property, these individuals have become ill with Salmonella," said House.
Mt. Healthy Hatchery echoed the same warning Friday: "Chicks purchased from our hatchery should be considered as farm animals -- not pets -- and should be treated as such."
A Salmonella infection generally lasts from 4 to 7 days but can become more severe and even lead to death.
Dr. Thomas Collins, with MetroHealth Medical Center, said, "Prevention is hand washing. The basics of very good hand washing with soap and water, or sanitizers like Purell, work very well."
If a person suspects they are infected, they should seek medical attention right away.
The hatchery maintains that it is cooperating with health officials to prevent further outbreaks.
"Mt. Healthy Hatchery has retained a national expert in Salmonella reduction and elimination to oversee our internal intervention strategy. That strategy includes evaluating our supplier relationships and the flocks that could have been a source of the Salmonella Altona (SA) and conducting testing for SA of all Mt. Healthy-owned and source flocks. To date, all those test results have been negative," the company said. "We are committed to finding answers -- and we will work tirelessly to do so. The health and well-being of our flocks, and the safety of our customers, is of paramount importance to us.
