Registration now open for Warner Theatre's summer program
The goal of the program is to provide children and teens with an opportunity to explore a wide variety of performing and visual arts. Classes cover a variety of disciplines: Acting & Improv, Tap Dance (students must bring their own tap shoes), Song Writing, Musical Theatre, Creative Writing, Visual Art, Technical Theatre, Audition Technique and more. No previous experience is necessary! The Summer Program is offered in three sessions: Session 1 will be held from July 11-22 for ages 7-12, Session 2 will be held form July 25-August 5 for ages 7-12 and Session 3 will be held form August 8-19 for ages 8-19. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9am – 4pm at the Warner Theatre Center for Arts Education. An attempt will be made to break down students into groups based on ability and experience whenever possible. Groups are small (no more than 20 students) and led by an experienced instructor, as well as several counselors and teaching assistants. Built by Warner Brothers Studios and opened in 1931 as a movie palace (1,772 seats), the Warner Theatre was described then as "Connecticut's Most Beautiful Theatre." Damaged extensively in a flood, the Warner was slated for demolition in the early 1980s until the non-profit Northwest Connecticut Association for the Arts (NCAA) was founded and purchased the theatre. The Warner reopened as a performing arts center in 1983, and restoration of the main lobbies and auditorium was completed in November 2002. In 2008, the new 50,000 square foot Carole and Ray Neag Performing Arts Center, which houses a 300 seat studio theatre, 200 seat restaurant and expansive school for the arts, was completed. Today, the Warner is in operation year-round with more than 160 performances and 100,000 patrons passing through its doors each season. Over 10,000 students, pre K-adult, participate in arts education programs and classes. Together, with the support of the community, the Warner has raised close to $17 million to revitalize its facilities. NCAA's mission is to preserve the Warner Theatre as an historic landmark, enhance its reputation as a center of artistic excellence and a focal point of community involvement, and satisfy the diverse cultural needs of the region. Rochambeau Army Marchers to Camp in Monroe - Monroe, CT Patch
French troops led by General Rochambeau marched through Connecticut to join General George Washington's Continental Army in New York during the Revolutionary War, and the combined forces overtook Lt. General Earl Cornwallis and the British army in Yorktown, Virginia. It proved to be the fatal blow to English rule, securing America's independence.
A group is doing a reenactment of that historic journey, and the Rochambeau Marchers will be camping on the Town Green in Monroe on Wednesday and Thursday nights, before continuing their trek early Friday morning. The route goes from Providence all the way to Yorktown.
"This is somewhat of a repeat of the march and encampment that took place during Monroe's Duc de Lauzun Festivities in 2008, five years ago, but no elaborate festivities are planned this time," said Richard Orr of Monroe.
The group includes two to three adult marchers and six youths with the Youth Conservation Corps, who are only marching across Connecticut. Orr said they will sleep in seven or eight tents on the green.
St. Peter's church is supplying meals for the first night, and may be able to supply more to these hungry marchers, Orr said, adding, "It is possible that more meal donations may be supplied, as the group has no cooking provisions."
Orr said one youth is allergic to tomatoes and another is a vegetarian.
During their stay, they will take part in the Monroe Historical Society's "Hands on History" session at the old school house on Thursday.
"The public is invited to meet and chat with the marchers, either on the Town Green, or at the Old School House," Orr said.
When the group leaves on Friday, they will march to Ridgefield, the next stop along their journey.
