WINDSOR: A fancy dress competition for dogs is just one of the attractions at Old Windsor’s Battersea Dogs and Cats Home show on Saturday. The home in Priest Hill, which rehouses abandoned dogs and cats, is holding its annual open day and the fancy dress competition is just one of the fun doggie contests going on. Other classes are waggiest tail, child’s best friend and best bull terrier. Entry is free and the open day is from 10.30am-4.30pm. WEXHAM: Summer Mela is heading for Wexham. Khalsa Primary School is holding the fundraising event, hosted by the parent-teacher association, on Saturday from noon until 6pm. Attractions include a performance by the UK’s leading Punjabi singer, Sukshinder Shinda, funfair rides, games, stalls, food, Sikh exhibitions and raffle at the school in Wexham Road. HURST: The Hurst Horse Show and Country Fair is taking place this weekend in School Road. The two-day event will include a hobby horse parade and gymkhana and a fancy dress parade for children. There will also be a giant tug-of-war, dog agility shows, and gymnastic and street dance routines. Stalls will again be selling home-made cakes, jams, sweets, jewellery, pottery, ceramics and glassware. The event at the Thames Valley Athletics Centre in Pococks Lane, will be hosted by soldiers from the Household Cavalry and Eton's mayor Philip Highy who will help behind the bar. The Salt Hill Cider company will be providing a local brew. There will be two live bands, Jive Express, a six piece from Hull, Yorkshire and Get-Rhythm, a three piece from Amersham. Fundraising plastic duck race in the Thames at Barry Avenue starts at 4pm. Classical music masterpieces will be played by a wealth of talent at a Windsor and Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra concert. The programme at Windsor Leisure Centre, in Stovell Road, is set to include Overture Rienzi by Wagner, Slavonic Dances by Dvorak, Tzigane for violin and orchestra by Ravel and the ballet suite Petrushka by Stravinsky. BURNHAM BEECHES: Watch the drama unfold at open-air performances of a Shakespeare classic. A Midsummer Night's Dream, by Skewbald Theatre, will be put on at Burnham Beeches on Saturday and Sunday. Audiences will be taken on a guided walk through the woodland as part of the 105-minute performance, which will include puppetry, live music, dance and storytelling. Spirit of the 60s Day, from 10am-5.30pm, will include live music, classic cars and boat trips on the Thames for the whole family. Makeovers will be available in the Water Garden and there will be 60s-style photo shoots in a mobile studio. The Fab and Groovy Quiz will offer two free tickets for lucky winners to Cliveden Rocks, on August 6, and a Patsy lookalike from TV series Absolutely Fabulous will mingle with the crowds. Nine gardens across the village will open their doors to the public. Where do I get agility dog equipment?

1. The cheapest good quality agility set I’ve seen retail is at http://www.affordableagility.com and they sell an “agility in a bag.” It’s 6 PVC weaves, 2 adjustable jumps, a tire (keep the frame, junk the tire and get drainage pipe from Home Depot for a realistic tire), a pause box (worthless but you can use the PVC for other things) and a chute (not bad). It’s about $ 150. They well other equipment there as well.

2. Make your own. The Jim Hutchins book (which I have) called “Do it yourself agility equipment” is excellent–I used it to make my A-frame. You can use PVC to make most of the obstacles. I have a teeter, tire, 10 jumps and 12 weaves in my backyard now–all made from PVC. And using PVC to make a base for a dog-walk.

3. Do not get a cheap tunnel. You want to train your dog to run tunnels fast. Cheap tunnels give. And they don’t have enough stability to run on the walls on a curve. So a cheap tunnel is bad for training.

4. Some trials will have agility equipment exhibits where you can buy stuff.

5. But mostly you either make it or buy it online. The clean run website has some of the PVC joints that make it easy to build jumps. Otherwise PVC at Home Depot and a PVC cutter is all you need for that. For the dog-walk and A-frame, you should make your own or buy locally–you’ll pay through the nose to have them shipped.

Your best bet would be at an actual agility trial – venders often have equipment for sale. You may be able to find a ‘starter’ kit at your local pet store…I know a store near me carries a little starter kit that comes with a small tunnel, a few weave poles, etc. The problem with that, however, is that they’re flimsy and wouldn’t be good for long-term use. Still, if you’re just starting and want to look for cheap equipment to just start out with, that may be your best bet.
