The North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge board of directors has elected two new board members. David Prentice, DVM of Elanco Animal Health and Christie Stanley, PhD from Land O'Lakes Purina Feed are new to the panel. The NAIDC is run by the same staff that operates World Dairy Expo in Madison.

In addition, the NAIDC board elected new officers to lead the group. Luciene Ribero, APC, Inc., Visalia, Ca., is incoming chair, while Michael Van Amburgh, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., was elected vice chair, and Owen Bewley, Prince Agri Products, Susquehanna, Pa. is finance chair. Returning executive committee members include Coleen Jones, Pennsylvania State University, Craigsville, Va., as program chair, and Tami Tollenaar, Tollenaar Holsteins Dairy, Elk Grove, Ca., as publicity chair.

Other NAIDC board members include Devin Albrecht, Prairie State/Select Sires, Hampshire, Il.; Jean Conklin, Yankee Farm Credit, ACA, White River Jct., Vt.; Chris Dei, Sierra Vista Nutrition Consulting, Fresno, Ca.; Marcia Endres, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Mn.; Barry Putnam, Cargill Animal Health, Ithaca, N.Y.; Jon Robinson, PhD, Fresno State University, Fresno, Ca.; Amy te Plate Church, Genex, Shawano, Wi.; and Dave Winston, M.S., Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va.

Retiring board members are Rob Sheffer, Cargill Animal Nutrition, Albany, N.Y. and Kas Ingawa, PhD, NC State University/Dairy Records Management Systems, Raleigh, NC.

The North American Dairy Challenge was established as a management contest to incorporate all phases of a specific dairy business.

Land O' Lakes n' Yoopers | Imperfect Destiny

June 11 thru 19 —The Land O Lakes, WI and Watersmeet, MI area of the country is a place that helped shape Jim’s early years. Our annual family vacation was to take our canoes up to the Sylvania Recreation Area in the Michigan U.P. for a week or two of canoeing and camping. The area is a very unique place in the country with outstanding scenery and outdoors sporting activities that is still relatively undiscovered. I’ve been looking forward to spending some time here for many years since we moved out west.

Sylvania was designated a wilderness area in 1987 and has a series of lakes accessible by canoe and land portages. The water is clear, pristine, and the fishing can be outstanding. In the 35 some years since I started visiting this area it has hardly changed a bit. For more info see Sylvania Wilderness on Wikipedia.

My brother actually lives in the area now and is the law enforcement officer for this portion of the Ottawa National Forest. He set us up with a canoe so we could spend a few days paddling. Thanks Steve! It was great to get out on these lakes after so many years. It brought back lots of memories. There are very few places left where you can experience unspoiled waters like this.

We also wanted to come here to spend some time with my brother and his family. During our childhood years for some reason we never really had a tight bond. Then after college Julie and I spent the last 22 years exploring the west. Now, into our 40′s, it was good to finally reconnect. We had a GREAT time. I even had the opportunity to learn a bit about NFS Law Enforcement first hand as an observer. Pat, my sister-in-law, gave me the opportunity to learn about the NFS Nursery in Watersmeet, MI: The J.W. Toumey Nursery (more at http://bit.ly/iZLC5R ). It was pretty interesting to learn about this aspect of the forest service and well worth a visit if you are in the area. Something like 3-4 million trees are grown and shipped annually in addition to 600,000 or so smaller plants grown in the greenhouses.

Steve gave us the locals tour of the gorgeous Cisco Chain of Lakes and also took us out for some bluegill fishing. We shared some great meals together as a family. Good times. Our cousin Brian even made a very welcome surprise appearance.

All-in-all spending time getting to know Steve, Pat, and our amazing nephews Cody and Taylor was the highlight of the trip for me. We are looking forward to returning next year and spending even more time—maybe next June for Cody’s high school graduation. Jim is considering doing some volunteering with the Forest Service next time around.
