Gabrielle Giffords kisses Mark Kelly in 1st appearance since being shot in the ...
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has made an emotional first public appearance since being shot in the head at a political event in Arizona in January.
A smiling Giffords emerged in a wheelchair and rose to kiss her astronaut husband Mark Kelly at a ceremony in Houston, Texas, today.
The scenes sparked tears and applause among the hundreds of people at the Johnson Space Center where Mr Kelly was receiving an award.
Miss Giffords' hair was much shorter than in previously released photos, and she wore glasses, a beige scarf, a light shirt, jeans and sneakers.
She appeared to be in good spirits, talking and laughing with those sitting next to her as the crew of the recently returned space shuttle Endeavour, a mission commanded by her husband, were honoured.
The smiling couple held hands and chatted with others at the event.
A hospital spokesman said of Miss Giffords that she had 'shown clear, continuous improvement from the moment she arrived,' and doctors have repeatedly expressed surprise at the speed of her recovery.
Six people, including a federal judge and a nine-year-old girl, were killed and 12 others wounded in the shooting spree on January 8.
In March, the alleged shooter, Jared Loughner, was declared mentally unfit to stand trial.
Experts found the 22-year-old to be schizophrenic and unable to help in his own defence or understand court proceedings.
Earlier this week it emerged that Loughner will be forced to take anti-psychotic drugs.
Loughner's lawyers filed an emergency motion on Friday asking U.S. District Judge Larry Burns to stop the prison doctors from administering the drugs.
Mr Burns has twice denied the defence team's requests to be given notice before their client is drugged.
Loughner has been at a Missouri prison medical facility since Mr Burns declared him mentally incompetent to stand trial in May.
Defence lawyer Judy Clarke wrote that a prison administrative hearing on June 14 found Loughner was a danger to himself.
She said that she has no idea whether or not the medical staff have started to administer anti-psychotic drugs.

After he was sentenced, his youngest sister, Jamey Burns, said her brother never tried to shoot the officers. She claims the shots were aimed in the air. He was panicking, she said. One of Mr. Burns' supporters called him a “crack shot.

Reports had suggested the warrants were burned that year but it now appears Mr Fayed, who sold Harrods last year, kept them in storage. The film's final scene was shot last year. It is not clear if all Harrods' warrants were put on the bonfire.
The Simpsons: Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part One (season finale)
In no episode has Burns been more evil than in the two-parter "Who Shot Mr. Burns" that bridged the sixth and seventh seasons. He becomes so evil in fact, that Smithers actually turns against him, even though it "violates every sycophantic urge" in his body.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. The episode begins with another normal day at Springfield Elementary, with one minor difference: Super Dude, the classroom gerbil, has died, crushed by his own water bottle. Willy buries the gerbil in the boiler room, assuring the dead rodent that his own father simply got thrown in the bog when he died. Although, didn't his father appear in the season ten episode "Monty Can't Buy Me Love?" Yes, he did, but let's not worry about that, okay? Okay.
While digging, Willy strikes oil, and Springfield Elementary soon becomes rich. They go crazy buying everything they can for the school, including double guitars and chocolate microscopes. Burns is furious that the oil doesn't belong to him, and tries to trick Skinner into giving the money to the local power plant by disguising himself as one of the kids. Skinner sees through the disguise, but Burns is adamant: "I want that oil well! I've got a monopoly to maintain! I own the electric company, the water works, plus the hotel on Baltic Avenue!"
On the day the school is supposed to tap the well, Burns taps it first and the school is left without any money. This means the new jazz instructor, Tito Puente, won't be hired, which angers Lisa. Also, the oil destroys Bart's treehouse and injures his dog. Also, despite Homer's many attempts to get Burns to remember his name, including spraypainting it on his office wall, Burns has no idea who he is, which continues to infuriate Homer. As his final act of malevolence, Burns blocks out the sun during a town meeting, and is later shot behind a building. Next season we find out it was Maggie who (accidentally) shot him, but according to the audio commentary, many clues are given during the episode if you're the sort of insane person who pays attention to such minute details:
Several times the letters M, W, and S appear, which is intended to lead you to suspect wither Waylon Smithers or Maggie Simpson:
Skinner tells Burns his name is " W . Seymour Skinner." This is the first episode where we hear M oe's last name, which is " S zyslak.
