Band teacher laid off due to budget cuts

MIRAMAR, Fla. (WSVN) -- A South Florida band teacher as been laid off after budget cuts in Broward County.

Everglades High School band director Marcos Rodriguez packed his stuff Thursday after being laid off due to the budget cut situation in Broward County. "This has put a strain on my marriage, and I have my first child on the way," said Rodriguez.

Band students are not happy to loose their only band teacher. "The fact that he's going through so much in his own personal life right now, and then he has to go through this. Loosing a job in general is not a good feeling," said Michael Nelomes.

Hundreds of teachers gathered to protest education cuts at a Fort Lauderdale rally several weeks ago.

In the last five years, the high school has had three different band directors, and the changes are affecting the students and the program. "I had a director last year and then I have to change again, and if I go to the next grade, I have to change again then I have to restart all over again. And that means I have a new band director every year in my school year so far," said student Nikko Wasserman.

Dozens of students wrote letters to Rodriguez on his last day hoping something could be done. "Dear Mr. Rodriguez, I appreciate everything you have done for me and the band," read Rodriguez.

"I don't think that we could ever replace Mr. Rodriguez," Nelomes said.

The county does not know who will replace Rodriguez but said, in order for him to be considered for the position, Rodriguez has to reapply. "It's scary and upsetting. It's hard not to cry, and this is probably the last time I see these kids," said Rodriguez.

Alvin Davis a candidate for Florida Teacher of the Year

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Miramar High School music teacher Alvin Davis, has been chosen as one of five finalists to compete for the 2012 Macy’s/Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year Award. This is the second year in a row that a BCPS Teacher of the Year has been named a state finalist. Last year, Allan Phipps of South Plantation High School also received this honor.

Florida Department of Education Commissioner Eric J. Smith, along with Melissa Goff, Vice President for Media Relations and Cause Marketing of Macy’s, were on hand to make a big surprise announcement.  A Celebration of Excellence Pep Rally kicked off the event to celebrate the student’s success during the spring trimester. The celebration included the school’s award winning band, drum line, the step team and cheerleaders.           Miramar High Principal Brian Faso recognized those students that have gone above and beyond in academics and athletics.  The high school music teacher was called to the center of the gymnasium and told that he had been chosen as one of five finalists for the prestigious honor. Upon receiving the good news, Davis was presented with a $5,000 check by the Macy’s Foundation and a $500 Macy’s gift card.  The Macy’s Foundation also presented a $1,000 check to the school.          “The finalists for the Teacher of the Year award have demonstrated the extraordinary talent, knowledge and skill to ensure student success,” said Commissioner Smith. “We too often underestimate the academic potential of our students and the efficacy of our teachers. I’m honored to recognize each of these outstanding individuals for their commitment to the success of all children and their selfless dedication to teaching.”         For the 23rd year, Macy’s will sponsor and produce the awards ceremony. During the event, the remaining 67 nominees from around the state will be recognized for their achievements and excellence in teaching. Each of the nominees will be presented with a $750 personal cash award and a $250 grant for their school, funded by the Macy’s Foundation.         In addition to the $10,000 grant funded by the Macy’s Foundation, the Teacher of the Year will receive awards from Macy’s including an all-expense paid trip for four to New York City to attend the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
