American Legion flag disposal is a tribute to Ol' Glory
MUSCATINE, Iowa — Eugene and Darlene Shay bid a dignified goodbye to some old friends Friday evening at Muscatine’s American Legion Post 127.
The couple stood beneath an umbrella in the evening drizzle witnessing a flag disposal ceremony which included two of their American flags and a U.S. Marine Corps flag.
“This is the first flag disposal ceremony we’ve been to,” said Darlene Shay. “It’s wonderful.”
American Legion Commander Sandy Lee asked the Shays if they needed a new flag, and the couple told him they had already replaced theirs.
Respect for the American flag is important to Eugene Shay, 86, a World War II Marine who served as a Japanese interpreter in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
He and Darlene said they appreciated hearing the prayers and words of honor directed toward the flags by Legion officers before being burned in a single pile.
“Is the present condition of these flags the result of their usual service as the Emblem of our Country?” asked Second Vice commander Craig Moss, a Vietnam veteran, as the ceremony began.
Sergeant-at-Arms Ray Dietrich said the faded flags had been placed on graves and in public places as he presented them to his fellow WWII veteran, First Vice Commander Dick Stammer.

Lee who was assured the flags had become faded in worthy in a tribute of service.
Lee, a Vietnam veteran, told the audience the flags are, “A precious symbol of all that we and our comrades have worked for and lived for and died for - a free nation of free men...”
The Color Guard led the march of the flags to be burned before Chaplain Joe Rieke, a Vietnam Veteran prayed.
“Almighty God, Captain of all hosts and Commander over all, bless and consecrate this present hour,” said Rieke, who ended his prayer with - “May Thy Holy Light spread over us and bring to our hearts renewed devotion to God and our Country.”
Rieke, the Legion’s commander elect, said the flag disposal ceremony is conducted at least once a year, and sometimes twice, depending on the number of flags that are brought to the Legion.
“This is the only proper way to dispose of the American flag, said Rieke.
Lee’s wife, Terri Lee, said the public is invited to bring flags into the Legion at 110 S. Houser St., or place them in the red, white and blue drop box near the Legion entrance.
