“What were they thinking?”
The “they” refers to Superintendent Greg McMillan and the Clare Public School District’s Finance Committee, which came up with a number of ways to cut almost $500,000 from the district’s 2011-12 budget.
One of the ideas to save money included taking Mike Schubart, currently Athletic Director (60% of his job) and Assistant Principal (40% of his job) at Clare High School and having him: give up his assistant principal duties, retain most but not all of his athletic director duties and also become full-time Clare Primary School principal.
So he’d be doing about 1.5 jobs, but he also gets a $4,000 pay raise for the extra work.
So who does the assistant principal job duties taken off of Schubart’s plate, you might be wondering? Great question, glad you asked that.
Well, the proposal has current Clare High School Principal Lee Turner taking on that 40% of Schubart’s job, but alas with not even $1 more in pay for doing so.
Here’s a rundown of Schubart’s duties that Turner would have to absorb after Schubart departs to Clare Primary School as its new principal:
Turner must do all evaluations of tenured teachers instead of only half of the evaluations.
Turner must assume role of attendance officer that has not belonged to the principal for at least the last seven six years.
Turner must deal with all discipline issues instead of only those involving juniors and seniors (Schubart has been in charge of discipline for freshmen and sophomores.)
Turner also won’t be able to rely upon support of eliminated liaison officer (assuming plans go through to eliminate Officer Greg Kolhoff’s role as CPS liaison officer).
So we find it odd that the focus has been placed only on “transferring” Schubart to serve as Clare Primary School principal, but nary a mention about the elimination of the assistant high school principal’s job (which, as you’ll recall has been 40% of Schubart’s job).
In addition to the $4,000 raise for becoming Primary School principal, Schubart would also be provided with a game manager to assist with home athletic contests in his continuing role as athletic director. However, the CHS principal who will be doing his job as principal plus the job of assistant principal, received no pay raise and is not provided with any extra administrative support.
