Man charged in Sam's Club card scheme

Detroit — The U.S. Secret Service has arrested a man it says helped run a credit card caper that stole more than $645,000 worth of merchandise from Sam's Club stores across the Midwest, including one in Wixom.

The man, Terrell Dwayne Mason, 29, will appear today in U.S. District Court in Detroit, where he is charged with unlawful transfer of identification documents. His hometown was not immediately available.

According to a criminal complaint, Mason helped run a scam from September 2010 until this month that used fake driver's licenses and credit cards to illegally buy laptop computers, video game consoles, iPads and iPods.

Several suspects appeared to be working together to steal from stores across the Midwest. The scheme involved someone getting a Sam's Club membership with a fake driver's license and then using bogus credit cards to buy big-ticket items.

Within three days of the purchase, the bank would call and report the transaction as fraud or identity theft, according to the criminal complaint.

Investigators later linked multiple suspects to an organized criminal scheme after reviewing video surveillance, financial spreadsheets and the phony Sam's Club membership cards.

In one case, a man signed up for five Sam's Club memberships using different names. The photos on the membership cards were of the same man, according to the criminal complaint.

Sam's Club officials posted the man's photo inside stores, asking employees to be on alert.

In October 2010, employees spotted the man inside a Sam's Club in Wixom. After he bought $1,067 worth of merchandise, employees followed him to the parking lot and wrote down his license plate number.

The license plate led to a Wyandotte man, whose driver's license photo matched images of the man from Sam's Club surveillance video involved in fraudulent purchases.

The investigation led to a traffic stop June 20 in Missouri. The man was a passenger inside a vehicle in which investigators found a stack of credit cards.

The man told Secret Service agents he got the phony driver's licenses and credit cards from his boss, who was later identified as Mason, the complaint states.
