Time Warner Cable expanding its Tri-State footprint
Time Warner Cable announced last week that it's expanding its cable, Internet and telephone footprint in the Tri-State, inking an agreement with NewWave Communications to purchase NewWave's Kentucky and Tennessee cable operations.
The deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year, will cost Time Warner Cable $260 million in cash and will give the company an additional 70,000 basic video subscribers, 42,000 Internet subscribers and 26,000 phone subscribers.
NewWave's systems in the Tri-State included in the deal include Madisonville and Beaver Dam, Ky., which serve customers in Hopkins and Ohio counties.
Time Warner Cable presently operates cable systems in Shawneetown and Junction, Ill.; Newburgh, Chandler, Rockport, Reo and Hatfield, Ind.; and Dixon, Clay, Wheatcroft, Livermore, Calhoun, Morganfield, Waverly, Uniontown and Owensboro, Ky.
Once the deal closes, NewWave will continue to serve approximately 80,000 customers in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas, the total reflecting the company's recent purchase of Avenue Broadband, which I told you about earlier this month.
The NewWave purchase may not be the last acquisition for Time Warner in the Tri-State; recent reports indicate the company remains interested in possibly purchasing Insight Communications, which serves the Evansville area. Time Warner Cable CEO Glenn Britt said that a bid for Insight, which serves Evansville, Henderson, Jasper and a number of other area communities, remains "under review."

WTVW'S NEW DIRECTION TO BE ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK
Since it was announced in mid-May that WTVW will be losing its Fox affiliation to WEVV — the switch of Fox programming is eight days away — there has been much speculation about what WTVW will do starting on July 1.
While a few details have leaked out, the station hasn't yet made anything official, but that will change this week. Unofficially, however, if what I've heard proves to be true, loyal viewers of the station should be quite pleased with what's coming.
WILL WIN CUSTOMERS LOSE FOX?
While most Tri-State viewers will only have to change channels to find Fox programming eight days from now, there is one group of Tri-Staters who may have more difficulty.
Wabash Independent Networks (WIN), a cable and digital video company based in Flora, Ill., has to this point not responded to requests for information on where its customers will get their Fox shows after WTVW loses them. Unlike the other networks, WTVW has long been WIN customers' only option for Fox and its shows such as "House" and "Bones," let alone Major League Baseball and other sports.
