Save-A-Lot Breaks Ground On Planeview Grocery Store
The groundbreaking for the Save-A-Lot took place at Pawnee and George Washington Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. The plot is within walking distance for many residents in the Planeview neighborhood, which is the only way many of them say they are able to get to a grocery store. What residents had to say when they heard the news was, 'finally.'
"Finally! It was great, I was ecstatic," said Planeview resident Seth Horn.
Because those living in the area say there's not currently a grocery store within a short distance for many residents who don't have access to transportation. This one will be just a short walk away.
"We saw the community support and the real need and felt like we just needed to keep pushing and pushing until we were able to do it," said Save-A-Lot General Manager Tim Rhodes.
Save-A-Lot says it was able to do it with the help of the previous landowner who sold the plot at half price to make way for the store because of the great need in the area.
The city also approved $55,000 in grant money for sidewalk and street improvements.
"I am extremely blessed to see that we have a part of the community that has been under served for so long finally getting their shot at a really nice improvement," said District III City Council Member James Clendenin.
It's an improvement residents say is more than just a luxury, but a necessity that they don't currently have.
"Fresh vegetables and bread, eggs, milk, the simple things.... you have to go a long ways to get," said Planeview resident John Stevens.
The project is set to be complete November 1st. Save-A-Lot will be hiring for 30 new positions. It will take applications at its 13th and Grove location.

Rite Aid Cautious on Save-A-Lot - Supermarket News
"It's obviously a significant change for our stores to go from no perishables to a lot of perishables, because perishables are a big part of the mix in these stores, and thats where we have a learning curve," John Standley, chief executive officer of Rite Aid, said during a conference call reviewing the retailer's quarterly financial results Thursday. "I think were making some good progress with it, but I think we have to convince ourselves that thats a business that we can successfully execute and take good care of before we get too far down the line with this thing. So we again remain very encouraged by the early results, but weve got some work to do.
