Resident peacock a sight for neighbours' sore eyes
HE may be an itinerant bachelor with some unsanitary habits who only shows up when he wants a feed, but Warrandyte’s stray peacock always gets a warm welcome at the Heffernan household.
Keiron Heffernan, who knows the bird as Mr Peacock, said his family considered him a second pet.
“In the morning I go out to feed the cat and he’s waiting behind to clean up what the cat doesn’t eat,” Mr Heffernan said.

“He comes into our house if we leave the door open but we have to be very careful about how we approach him.
“If he gets frightened he poos on the carpet, but we love him so we put up with it.”
The Heffernans’ neighbour, Phillipa Greenwood, said the bird - which she calls Chookie because she thinks he sounds like a chicken - was one of two that showed up 10 years ago.
And while the second peacock disappeared at some point, Chookie, with his brilliant plumage, has become something of an icon.
“We’re all pretty protective of him,” Ms Greenwood said.
“When he goes away for too long, people start to ask where he is.”
