Tucked away on a corner of Boulevard Des Capucines close to the Opera in Paris is one of the Grandes Dames of French clothing institutions, Olde England. This store evokes a tradition and heritage of an England where tea is still served at four, flutes of champagne are served at Christmas, and the mahogany is oiled and the brass polished ship-shape Bristol fashion.
I have been a client of this shop for a donkey’s age and have watched it change hands several times. Somehow, despite the shifts in ownership, one thing remains constant: the quality, the style and the service.
Today, this noble shop is under the direction of Albert Goldberg, “the tailor’s son”, which he bought from the Richmond Group in 2006. The Richmond Group had pushed the brand equity of the store to the brink of bankruptcy. For the RG, Olde England was just a cash cow. There was no passion or engagement.
Albert Goldberg might be familiar to some of our readership, for he was the original founder and designer of Faconable, which in the “old days” was situated on the rue Royale. When the shop kicked off, it became an immediate sensation with the BCBG crowd of Paris and France at large. The clothes were well made, stylish, and inspired from an Anglo-American preppy theme but reinterpreted with a Gallic voice. The shop was sold in 2000 to Nordstrom, an American department store chain and holding company.
His personal story is similar to many other immigrant families, and is a case study of hard work, vision and entrepreneurship. His passion, which rings out like bells of Notre Dame is craftsmanship and impeccable taste. Good taste is timeless, and when Albert Goldberg finally decided to get back into the act after a period of semi-retirement, he literally saved this noble heritage brand and Parisian institution.
He has given the store a new voice, distilled and stripped clean of excess. The women’s clothes and accessories feature the hottest style and constitute the entire first floor of the premises. The colour palate has a Mediterranean register and whispers Portofino and Capri. The cuts are Italian, featuring little or no padding in the blazers and tweed sports jackets. The cloths come from the finest mills in Italy, Scotland or England.
Just for pleasure, I recently tried on a navy blue blazer in a lightweight 130 wool from Loro Piana. It draped over my shoulders and neck as if it had been cut for my body. This is clearly bespoke quality but with a ready-to-wear price tag.
