Dane's Dairy still serving up ice cream

There's no such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as free ice cream for dogs.

"Any dog that comes to Dane's Dairy gets a free doggie dish," said John Dane, original owner of Dane's Drive-in Dairy. "It's been quite an attraction over the years."

With the dog days of summer well under way, kids and families always are looking for a way to beat the heat. For more than 50 years, Dane's Drive-in Dairy, 1430 Willow Creek Court in Iowa City, has been a hot spot to cool down.

The story of Dane's Drive-in starts a decade earlier at the Dane family farm. Back then, Dane's Drive-in current owner Donna Dane said people would drive their Model-Ts to the farm to buy milk the Dane's produced from their Holstein cattle. In 1960, the family built their store along Highway 1, back when it was only two lanes.

"We moved it back when it became a four-lane highway," Donna Dane said.

The drive-in moved to its current location in 1991. John and wife Allegra sold the store to their daughter two years ago.

"I have worked many years here, since I was really young," Donna said. "I was manager for over 20 years. I love working at Dane's Dairy. I just love seeing people."

Even with the moves over the years, little has changed at the store during the last five decades. The store still is known for serving up tasty soft serve ice cream at rock bottom prices, and their twist flavors -- such as strawberry and cake batter -- are big hits.

"People love our twists," Donna Dane said.

Over the years, they've added a few things to the menu, such as shakes and twisters -- a combination of ice cream and candy.

Those who have lived in the area since childhood will remember one feature that sets Dane's apart from all other ice cream shops.

"We continue to have a petting zoo," Donna said.

The drive-in has seen competition come and go. Soon, they could get another competitor if the plans to open a Dairy Queen at the site of the old Walmart come to fruition. John Dane said the drive-in will continue to do what they do best.

"We try to specialize to families and have a good product," he said. "Everyone seems to like it."

Donna Dane described providing ice cream to children, families -- and their dogs -- a "blessing."

"I'm honored to be a part of the community," she said.

Press Release: Willow Creek launches Gourmet Squeeze | Just Food Now

I love good olive oil and nowadays I particularly love good South African oil! There was a time when I only used the imported Italian or Spanish stuff and, make no mistake, they make outstanding oils. However, a few years ago I discovered South African olive oil and I’ve never looked back. There’s a huge variety of oils from which to choose and the new Willow Creek Estate Blend

Willow Creek’s revolutionary  Gourmet Squeeze bottle is filled with their most popular Estate Blend extra virgin olive oil. The pioneering Gourmet Squeeze packaging will change the lives of chefs, foodies and kitchen novices alike and the handy 750ml bottle boasts an easy-to-use nozzle with a 1.5mm pour opening which allows you to direct and control the flow of olive oil as desired. Simply unscrew the cap, give the bottle a gentle squeeze and voila – no fuss, no mess. Willow Creek’s superb extra virgin olive oil available in the Gourmet Squeeze bottle has just won a distinction at the esteemed L’Orciolo d’Oro olive oil competition in Gradara, Italy – a special feat considering that other entrants included olive oil masters from Italy, Spain, Greece and Argentina. Foodies will love Gourmet Squeeze for its practicality and convenience. In addition, the unique nozzle – patent pending – allows the olive oil to be poured slower than with traditional olive oil spouts which means Willow Creek’s olive oil goes much further – minimizing waste and the waistline if you wish. The handful of chefs, counting James Martin and Evita Bezuidenhout that have been given a sneak preview of the bottle at the recent Good Food & Wine Show, is indeed very excited about its qualities. The PET bottle is also environmentally friendly and fully recyclable and the fact that it cannot break when dropped, renders it invaluable for any kitchen – especially with aspiring junior cooks around. Further increasing the benefits of this new packaging is the oxygen barrier and UV filter built into the brown hue of the bottle to keep the oil’s shelf life of at least two years intact. The bottle design reflects the by now familiar Willow Creek look and feel, enhancing customer recognition.  The 750ml bottle of Estate Blend extra virgin olive oil will be available at a bargain price of R92.Willow Creek Olive Estate has become known not only for their award-winning olive oils but also for their ground breaking innovation regarding the packaging of their products. “We want our clients to have a really extraordinary experience when using our products – both in terms of quality and superior taste and in terms of modern efficiency,” says Andries Rabie, Willow Creek’s Managing Director.
