The Hockeyroos' Champions Trophy hopes ended despite bouncing back from their shock loss to New Zealand with a 1-0 win over powerhouse Germany on Tuesday.

Australia's women needed a least a two-goal win to be a chance of progressing to the medal rounds but had to settle for a one-goal margin with a late goal to Jodie Schulz.

The result means the Hockeyroos can finish no better than fifth but coach Adam Commens felt his side would benefit from the experience.

'It was certainly an improved effort from last game and easily our best game to date at the tournament,' Commens said.

'They (Germany) weren't able to really get too many dangerous shots away while we had a three or four good chances.

'We need to become more accurate from penalty corners and from scoring in general as we had some chances that we should have put away. But I think that will come from more experience.'

After a questionable defensive performance in the 3-2 loss to the Kiwis on Sunday, Australia responded well by hassling the Germans throughout the match and causing several turnovers.

Despite some close attempts, the match was scoreless at halftime but the Hockeyroos maintained their intensity after the break.

Australia's best chances came from cracking shots by Emily Hurtz and Kellie White at the top of the circle, but when both were saved it looked as though the Hockeyroos were going to once again be made the pay for not being able to convert.

But they finally made the breakthrough when awarded their sixth penalty corner with four minutes remaining.

Schulz converted the chance to give Australia their first penalty corner goal of the tournament from 16 attempts.

The final minutes were frantic with Germany desperate for an equaliser but the Hockeyroos defence held firm for a confidence-boosting win.
