Air Force recruits provide community service in Broad Brook

Yard work, painting and staining were a few of the tasks young men and women performed at Park Hill Complex on Saturday, June 28. TSgt. Timothy Aldinger, an Air Force recruiter in Manchester, organized the group.

“We couldn’t get a lot done without him,” said Darlene Kelly, executive assistant at Park Hill. Three to four times each year, Aldinger brings recruits in the Delayed Enlistment Program to the Broad Brook apartments to assist with maintenance tasks.

“We help them out so the maintenance guys can save some time and money,” Aldinger said. Park Hill only has a couple of maintenance personnel, and the jobs back up.

Complex residents are elderly or disabled, 62 or older or on Social Security disability. Kelly said the complex is often left with empty apartments that have to be cleaned, fixed up and turned around quickly.

“Several jobs arise that need to be done but can’t [be done] in the course of a normal week,” Kelly said. The work Aldinger’s group does in the course of a Saturday helps the complex catch up.

“Everybody loves it,” she added. “They are such a great help.”

In addition to Air Force recruits, Aldinger was also able to gain help from a group of Marine poolees, the equivalent of Air Force DEP trainees, for the June workday. He hopes to team up with the Army for future projects.

Aldinger said community service is important in promoting the “whole person” concept the Air Force stresses. “It’s not just a uniform,” he said. “Airmen are to be well-rounded.”

Trainee Chris Bright mentioned the concept while working at the complex. “[Community service] rounds you out, so you get a better perspective,” he said. He added that the opportunities provided to recruits give them the chance to see what others’ lives are like.

You’re not actually IN the military until you swear in a second time to ship off for basic. so if you REALLY want it i’d threaten to renig on the contract (dont let yoru recruiter intimidate you, no the MPs wont go after you, no you wont go to jail, no yu wont be f*cked for the rest of your life. you are not military yet and there fore u dont fall under UCMJ) unless they give you what you want

Doesn’t matter if you’ve been sworn in. You are not in the army until you ship to BASIC. You cannot be forced to take the contract you have, but as you’ve found the recruiter will not be much help. The same thing happened with my nephew because he had a homeschool diploma(which we were told wasn’t good enough) and we were able to get his MOS changed. When the recruiter wouldn’t help us I went to the Air Force recruiter and discussed possible options for joining that branch. When I did that the Air Force recruiter was obligated to tell my nephews recruiter about our discussion. When my nephews recruiter heard about this the home school diploma was “magically” approved and his MOS was changed overnight.

It is very important thet neither you or your legal guardian talk to the other branch. It must be a friend or an uncle, cousin, etc. Let me stress again it cannot be you, your parents, or legal guardian.

REMEMBER, you are not obligated to ANYTHING at this point, even if you have done your initial swearing in. It does not matter what you’re told, if it’s not in your contract, YOU DON’T GET IT. Right now you hold all the cards, once you ship you’re at their mercy. My first duty station was as a clerk at infantry basic training and many soldiers came in thinking they were getting benefits (Army College Fund, Airborne School, etc.) When I saw that it wasn’t in their contracts all I could do was say, “Sorry, we’ll do the best we can but it’s probably not going to happen.” I got sick of saying that because it was extremely rare we were able to help them.
