Magic show kicks off summer library program

FRANKFORD — There were giggles and gasps heard throughout the Sussex County Main Library on Tuesday, but the librarians did not shush them. That's because the laughter was from children and parents attending the Summer Reading Opening Program, which featured the magic and comedy of Brian Richards.

Richards, a Moorestown resident, entertained the audience of about 20 children and 15 parents in the community room of the library's main branch with professional magic tricks and witty comedy that had both child and adult laughing in their seats.

"Reading is just like magic," the 20-year veteran performer told the children. "It can take you wherever you want to be."

The magic show was part of the library's week long kick-off for the Summer Reading Club, a popular free program for children and teenagers in Sussex County.

Jessica Steffens attended the magic show with her two daughters, Clara, 4, and Laney, 16 months.

"Every summer I try to get the kids registered as soon as I can," Steffens said. "The programs are free and the kids have so much fun, plus it gives us something different to do during the week."

Clara said she liked to go to the library and see the other kids and was looking forward to more magic shows.

"I saw one before at a birthday party," Clara said. "I like it."

There is a juggling show today at the Louis Childs Library in Stanhope at 10:30 a.m. and later at the Franklin branch at 2:30 p.m. The Summer Reading Club offers many programs for children throughout July and into August that feature craft activities, story times and sing-alongs. Parents can get a complete list of programs by stopping by any branch of the Sussex County Library or visiting www.sussexcountylibrary.org.

Katie Weis, 6, was one of a handful of kids who were chosen as junior magicians by Richards during his show. Katie performed a magic trick with Richards that had the kids rolling in laughter on the floor.

"It was the first time I ever did a magic trick," Katie said. "It was fun."

Katie's mother, Melissa Weis, said she began bringing Katie to the reading program last year and fell in love with it.

"This will be our second year coming to the program and I am looking forward to all of the

programs," Weis said. "I love to encourage reading.

Was it a crazy idea or was it destiny? The tricks you choose for the magic show are very important you should pick tricks for children that are suitable for their age and sex.Before you perform a show,watch a little children's television and see how the presenters act.They smile,laugh and appear to be enjoying themselves a very important part of being successful.You will learn quickly that the most difficult task facing the children's performer is to design the show to appeal to children and adults at the same time and at different levels.
