What? You Store Your Clothes in Plastic?

Dry cleaning bags are not your friends. They may appear to be helpful, caring sheaths of plastic, but in the end, they do not act like friends would. In fact, they will yellow your designer clothing and linen tablecloths and, eventually, trap moisture, which leads to mold. Would a friend lead to mold? And those garment bags — the really thick ones from nice stores? They are just as bad, perhaps worse for appearing to be extra protective. Barbara Harman knows this, and it is part of the reason she founded the Butler’s Closet , a new Web-based business that specializes in covers for clothing, furniture, linens and other precious things. The covers, made from fabric that is free of chemicals, bleaches, sizing and dyes, meet the same textile conservation standards used by museum curators. They retail from $16 to $135.

The idea for the company emerged from Harman’s own needs. She and her husband, Larry, have a weekend home in Old Chatham, N.Y. The living room windows face south. About 10 years ago, after recovering her furniture with expensive fabric, Harman went looking for protective covers. A weekend of daylight was one thing, but weeks of consistent sun exposure would almost certainly ruin her new upholstery. But she came up empty-handed.

She also looked for ways to protect her good clothing, including some couture pieces purchased during her stint as C.E.O. of Nina Ricci Perfumes, in the United States. There too her extensive searches led nowhere. As it happens, Phyllis Dillon, a cousin of her husband, is a curator and fashion historian who has worked for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New York State Council on the Arts. “I began to talk to Phyllis about the idea of making a line of items that would meet textile conservation standard,” Harman says.

With Dillon and Patsy Orlofsky, the founder of the Textile Conservation Workshop in South Salem, N.Y., as advisers, Harman was able to contact the companies that supply museums with the customized covers used in storing costume collections — suppliers who test the fabric before selling it. “There was no question that the covers had to use undyed and unbleached fabrics,” Harman says. “They had to have no zippers, no Velcro and no plastic.” She even made sure that her buttons — from the nondamaging corozo nut — met conservation standards. Interested in making her products locally, Harman found a Brooklyn-based manufacturer through the Garment Industry Development Corporation .
