OUTDOOR CONCERT: The Whitaker Music Festival will present a free outdoor concert by Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Cohen Amphitheater at the Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw Blvd. Bring chairs or a blanket. THURSDAYS @ THE INTERSECTION: KDHX and Grand Center will present a free concert by the Soulard Blues Band at 6 p.m., followed by a showing of "The Blues Brothers" at dusk Thursday at Strauss Park, at Washington and North Grand boulevards, across from the Fox Theatre.

"THRILL ME": Opening night for "Thrill Me: The Leopold and Loeb Story" is at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Gaslight Theatre, 358 N. Boyle Ave. in the Central West End. A reception will follow. Opening night is a fundraiser for Max & Louie Productions. The cost is $50. The show will then run through Aug. 14. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. If you love live theater and music, St. Louis is the place to be. This bustling Midwestern berg offers a variety of theater, from outdoor musical theater to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

For a historic and musical experience, head to The Muny, which is the country’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theater. The Muny began in 1916 with a production of “As You Like It,” and continues to this day each summer with a mix of Broadway standards and more modern fair, such as Legally Blonde.

Within a four-block radius known as The Grand Center, you will find plenty of entertainment. Grand Center includes Powell Symphony Hall, where you can enjoy performances by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, as well as galleries, museums and several theaters, including the famous Fox Theatre.

The restored Fox Theatre features performances of Broadway musicals such as Mamma Mia and Memphis, as well as live concerts from everyone from Santana to Eddie Vedder to Selena Gomez to Alison Krauss. Popular comedians also come to the Fox for performances.

Another idea is to head to the Sheldon Concert Hall, known as the Carnegie Hall of St. Louis. Here you will find everything from folk music to jazz to guitar quartets to chorale music and much more. The hall itself is a historic gem, built in 1912 by famed architect Louis C. Spiering. In its illustrious past, it has hosted notable speakers such as Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway and former President Dwight Eisenhower.

The aforementioned are just the tip of the iceberg. St. Louis is famous for its blues and jazz music, and you’ll find plenty of clubs and small theaters dedicated to this art form. The Stray Dog Theatre is an off-beat non-profit theater that offers a mix of plays and musicals performed by local actors. The Touhill Peforming Arts Center is yet another offering, with a full range of performances, including dance, opera, jazz, classical music and international music.
