Home of the Week: Brothers reside in a modern Pasadena castle
The front of the two-story structure is faced with stone and displays arched and angular rooftops as well as a curved wall resembling a turret. The entry to the front door features a bridge of ipe, a reddish Brazilian hardwood that suggests a drawbridge over a castle moat, only this bridge lies over a peaceful man-made pond lined with smooth, pale river rocks.
A few feet away, flanked by large boulders, a stream of water gurgles as it cascades down a stepped waterfall.
Most people only dream of owning their dream home. Jason built his. Afterwards, his big brother, Lance, 40, shuttered his Baltimore residence and moved in, too. The brothers grew up nearby.
The two share the space with two Bengel cats, Pee Wee and Big Boy.
The Bellman brothers aren't married - not yet. They're having too much fun. Jason owns two motorcycles, a Ducati and a BMW, and loves weeklong road trips astride one cycle or the other. Lance is into exercise. He has an athletic club membership and several serious workout machines at home.
Their home base is designed to accommodate their interests and work, social gatherings of good friends and quiet, reflective moments.
With a partner, the two own the Pasadena-based LandArt Associates, which provides landscaping and hardscaping services to residential and commercial clients throughout the tri-state area. The firm's talent for creative and innovative design and execution is evident throughout Jason's home and in the elegant landscape work-in-progress surrounding the home.
Long building processThe property is not too far from the home of the men's parents. The land was part of an estate sale in 2007. Jason purchased it, and spent the next couple years working through the permitting and grading processes. An old rancher on the property was torn down and a new septic system was installed before the foundation was poured.
Jason was the architect on the project. "I've designed houses before, but not on this scale. I worked with my friend Chris Brackens on the plans," he said. Through LandArt, I've done numerous remodeling jobs, too. We do facade makeovers and home improvements; and design and build pavilions and outdoor kitchens, rock gardens and decks."
High-end constructions techniques he's learned over the years on the job were incorporated into his dream house blueprints.
The nearly 4,000 square foot residence was officially built in 2009, but Jason has a multiyear plan for finishing the property. Work gets done on the home when he has downtime. A paving stone driveway is being installed, and he has nearly completed the landscaping in front. The backyard? Someday.
