When fiddlin' around is a good thing

Sounds of folk songs, bluegrass, jazz, blues, and even a waltz swirled around Christ Lutheran Church last week as a week-long fiddle camp took over the property. The third annual Midwest FiddlePal Camp is the brainchild of musician and Marine resident Brian Wicklund.

Nearly 100 students, ages nine into their 60s, participated in three classes a day with respected musician/teachers covering violin, bass, guitar and mandolin. Students came from as far away as Alaska and Sweden, all parts of Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin, and as close as Marine.

Wicklund has taught at many other fiddle camps both in the United States and abroad, and decided to try one of his own three years ago. It has grown every year since.

“I’ve played with many musicians in many locations and wanted to glean the best of the best and put it together right here at home,” Wicklund said. His standards are high. Not only must an instructor be a master of his instrument, but he or she must also establish a relationship with the students who can be youngsters, teens or adults.

While all violinists need to have good technique, be able to read music and follow a conductor, fiddlers — which means anything not classical — must also be able to understand theory, learn by ear, and be willing to improvise.

Another instructor commented that time focused on these things like at a fiddle camp can result in surprising growth and be a great confidence builder for a student.

Wicklund said, “I want the students to meet others who have similar interest, and experience the challenge and the fun of making music together.”

A typical day opened with a round of music from one of the instructors for the students gathered in the church sanctuary. Then students broke into groups and headed for two morning lessons with the visiting instructors. Snacks, a lunch break, a game of soccer at the Marine Elementary field, and students were back to an afternoon class.

In the later afternoon, the students convened again in the sanctuary for an all-camp review of the day’s instruction. Students observed what others had learned from the day, and were able to demonstrate what they had learned in their classes.

“One of the things I like best was being encouraged to try new techniques,” said an adult camper from southern Minnesota. “I would never have tried to improvise on my own, but since we are all learning together, it took some of the fear away.
