NBC29Cat Rescue Center Goes High-Tech
Over the past decade, the Siamese Cat Rescue Center in Madison County has placed more than 7,000 cats. The non-profit relies on volunteers, donations and even the internet to support its mission.
Armed with web cameras, Facebook and Twitter accounts, the rescue center is able to place the felines in homes not just in surrounding counties but across the state and up and down the east coast. Siri Zwemke started the Siamese Cat Rescue Center in 1998.
"Depending on the type of cat, they can get inquiries within five minutes of getting on the website," Siri said.
The center relies on 1,000 volunteers throughout its network to transport cats and provide foster care. Each month about 65 cats are placed in loving homes.
"We've got four kittens that were born to a feral mom out in Winchester that we're evaluating and bringing in. We've got a transport of cats coming up from Tennessee that have been in foster homes there," Siri said.
Siri said Siamese cats need a lot of attention and care so matching them with the right family is important.
"People are not limited by their area which is kind of neat so somebody in Charlottesville can adopt a cat that's in Connecticut and we transport it down," Siri said.
Siri's husband, Darrell Zwemke, said the internet is a big help.
"Cats just don't just have pictures now but they have videos and those are a very great way, especially since a lot of our adopters never get to meet the cats until they actually get them home," Darrell said.
The internet also allows the center to place cats in homes faster. The average adoption time is about 58 days.
