Drugs offer new hope for hepatitis cure

Walker Croft's illness had become so debilitating that he was getting his final affairs in order when he enrolled in a Houston study of an experimental drug for hepatitis C.

Croft, who was infected through a blood transfusion in the 1970s but didn't experience symptoms until the past decade, had been waiting for years for the drug, much touted but long in development. By the time researchers were ready to test it on patients, Croft was barely able to get out of bed.

Three years later, he pronounces himself a new man.

"It's hard to explain how much healthier I am," says Croft, 69, a real estate entrepreneur who divides his time between homes in Kerr­ville and Clear Lake Shores. "I went from having days I couldn't get off the floor to being able to climb a 12,000-foot mountain. Suddenly, I'm the picture of health."

For the first time in a decade, a new treatment is available for hepatitis C, a difficult-to-manage liver disease linked to 12,000 U.S. deaths a year. The Food and Drug Administration last month approved two new drugs, Incivek and Victrelis, either of which, when given in addition to standard therapy, raises the cure rate for the most common strain of the virus from less than 50 percent to more than 75 percent.

Hepatitis C, which was not identified until 1989, can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer and is the nation's leading cause of liver transplants. About 85 percent of people fail to clear the virus that causes the disease within six months of acquiring it and have the degenerative condition for the rest of their lives.

Doctors are optimistic that the new drugs are ushering in a new era of treatment, one in which hepatitis C is curable in virtually all patients. They say they're hopeful that the new drugs, and others in the pipeline, can make that achievable in the next five to 10 years.

Wider testing considered

The advance is prompting some liver specialists, or hepa­tologists, to appeal for more widespread testing of the hepatitis C virus. Between 3 million and 4 million people in the United States are infected with hepatitis C, even though as many as 75 percent of them don't know it.
